Biography
Phoebe De Ciman is a first born child. When only six months old her father moved the family to Ireland where he was pursuing a specialization in medicine. After completing his studies the family moved to Liberia until civil war broke out and the family was forced to flee. They spent three years in Ghana before immigrating to Saskatchewan.

Here Phoebe began to play basketball for the first time. “My first coach was great!” She definitely took to the game. She played with the provincial team for four years, with the University of Regina Cougars for five years and the University Games team Canada in 1999 and again in 2004. She also played on both the junior and senior National teams. Her involvement in sport and outstanding performance led to several trips including Russia, Taiwan, Spain and Brazil. She was also invited to the Olympic team training camp and even though she didn’t make the team, she is very proud of her effort.

Indeed, sport has taught Phoebe the importance of working as a team. She knows what it is like to win but has also known defeat and recognizes the lessons learned from both experiences.

Committed to giving back to the community, Phoebe coaches young girls of all ages through Basketball Saskatchewan Inc. She is also invited to speak on women’s rights, the realities of war and peace building, as well as, leadership issues by a variety of groups including schools, multicultural organizations and the International Women of Today to name only a few. Phoebe served as President of the Student’s Union at the University of Regina for two years, 2003 and 2004.

She graduated from the University of Regina with an Honours degree in Political Science in 2005. Her interests are numerous, varied, and international in scope.

Given her early childhood experiences Phoebe has learned to embrace change. She has had to learn how to say good-bye and how to make new friends. Admittedly ambitious, she enjoys a challenge.
