Biography
Murray Mayes, was the sixth of seven children born to George Harvey and Lecielle Crawford Mayes and a grandson of Joseph and Mattie Mayes. He grew up during the depression. His early experiences taught him about both the hardships of poverty as well as the rewards of perseverance. At the age of 16 Murray got involved in boxing where he learned how to protect himself. He also learned a lot about his own abilities and enjoyed the sport very much.

His early years were spent working with his father who managed a mixed farming operation. However, because money was hard to come by in those days it was agreed that Murray would have to work off the farm. His first job was with Boyd Brothers in North Battleford. Later he got on with Morrison’s Garage where he apprenticed as a mechanic. He was quickly promoted to the autobody shop. He studied mechanics at the Sharon Bible College and earned his journeyman certificate in autobody work. This required four years of experience and passing a written and practical test. He worked at Morrison’s for six and a half years before deciding to open his own business.

City Auto Body opened for business in 1959 at 682 110th Street in North Battleford. Although his partner Athol Young sold out his share after only a year, Murray continued to work hard to build a successful business. Over the years he has trained many men to do autobody repair work.

Murray married Marie, (Linda Mae Weisbrodt) 2 March 1963 and together they raised seven children of their own as well as four adopted children.
